Can termites cause damage to a vinyl liner in a swimming pool?

It doesn't happen often, but yes. Termites can damage a vinyl pool liner, leaving small holes that leak.

Signs of termite damage

Termite damage usually shows up as small, pin-like holes in the liner. On an inground pool, the holes usually start just above the waterline. On an above ground pool, they usually start in the cove area. Once termites begin, a liner can develop dozens of holes in a short time. They are thought to be drawn to the damp ground around a pool.

The clearest sign is termite trails or tunnels behind the liner. These are easiest to see once the liner is taken out of its bead track and pulled away from the wall, such as during a liner replacement. Don't fully drain an inground vinyl pool for liner work without guidance, because the liner can shift or float.

Get the termites treated

Termite treatment is a job for professionals, and do-it-yourself products seldom get rid of an existing termite problem. Choose a pest control company licensed by your state's department of agriculture or the agency that regulates termite control in your state, and get inspections and estimates from more than one company. If the liner has to be replaced, ask the company to treat the ground beneath the liner and around the perimeter of the pool deck.

Patch or replace the liner?

A few small punctures can often be patched if the rest of the liner is in good condition. Multiple leaks or widespread damage may need professional evaluation or a new liner. To find every hole first, see Detecting Leaks in Inground Pools or Finding and Fixing Leaks in Above Ground Pools. For patching, see Can Pool Liners Be Repaired? If you need a new liner, shop inground pool liners or above ground pool liners.
