Caring For Your Swimming Pool's Winter Mesh Cover
Every few weeks, add shock under a corner of the cover and brush it through the water. Keep the cover clear of debris, and on a safety cover, let snow melt on its own.
A mesh cover lets water through, and fine debris and algae spores can still get into the pool over the winter. A little care every few weeks makes your spring opening easier. High-shade mesh, which blocks 99% of sunlight, makes algae less likely than standard mesh.
Before you add shock
Important: Read and follow the label on your shock product. Wear safety equipment such as goggles and gloves. Never mix chlorine products with acid, or different pool chemicals with each other. Only pre-dissolve shock if the label tells you to, and then add the shock to water, never water to the shock.
Winter care steps
- Test your water before you add any chemicals.
- Every few weeks, pull back one corner of the cover and add shock in the amount your product label gives for your pool's size.
- Brush the shock out toward the center of the pool to spread it through the water. Use the opposite corner next time.
- Put the corner back as soon as you finish. If it is a safety cover, reattach it exactly as the cover's instructions specify. Safety covers must be installed and used according to the manufacturer's specifications.
- Clear debris off the top of the cover. During a dry spell, a leaf blower may work. If the debris is wet, drag it off with a leaf net on a telescopic pole.
Snow and water on the cover
- Mesh covers let water pass through, so they rarely need draining or pumping.
- On a safety cover, let snow melt naturally. Safety covers are designed to handle the weight.
- How much winter attention a mesh safety cover needs depends on how much snow you get.
Is a mesh winter cover a safety cover?
Not necessarily. A winter cover helps keep debris out but has no safety benefits. A safety cover is the type designed to prevent access to the pool. If you are not sure which you have, check your cover's product information before relying on it around children or pets.
