Is there a way to cool down the water in my above ground swimming pool?
Yes. Shade the pool, add a fountain and run it at night, and take off any solar cover. For more cooling, some heat pumps also have a cooling mode.
Why your pool water gets so warm
The most common reason is that the pool sits in full sun with no shade.
Ways to cool it down
- Add a fountain. A pool fountain connects to your pool's return and sprays water into the air, which helps the pool lose heat through evaporation. Run it at night, when the air is cooler, for the most effect. Shop above ground pool fountains.
- Shade the pool. A sun shade sail or other shade over the pool cuts down on direct sun.
- Take off the solar cover. Solar covers reduce heat loss from evaporation, which works against cooling.
- Add cold water. Topping up with cold water also helps.
What to watch for
Evaporation cools the water but also lowers the water level, so check it more often while you run a fountain. Water features can also use up chlorine faster, which is another reason to run them at night. Keep testing your water, and see What Are the Ideal Levels of My Pool Chemicals?
Need more cooling?
Some heat pumps can cool as well as heat. Hayward, for example, says its HeatPro Heat+Chill models can cool pool water in warm or arid climates. Not every model suits an above ground pool, so ask our Sales Support team which one fits yours.
