What Is an Inground Winter Cover and What Are Best Practices for Using One?

Inground winter covers are tarp-style solid covers used to help protect your pool during the winter season.

Inground winter covers are tarp-style solid covers that are held in place using water bags or water tubes.

Because they are solid covers, winter covers help block sunlight, which can reduce algae and bacteria growth during the winter months and help make spring cleaning easier. These covers also help keep debris out of the pool.

Inground winter covers are an economical option for winterizing a pool, but the material may need to be replaced every 1 to 5 seasons, depending on use, weather conditions, and care.

Tips and Tricks for Inground Winter Covers

  • Pull out slack or wrinkles so the cover is tight and properly positioned.
  • Keep sticks and leaf buildup to a minimum using a leaf rake or leaf blower.
  • Check for holes in the cover and water tubes before and during the season.
  • Use an automatic cover pump regularly to remove rainwater buildup.
  • Do not place the cover pump on a seam when draining water, as this can cause water from the pool to be drained.
  • Do not use bricks or sharp blocks to weigh your cover down. Use water tubes for inground pools instead.
  • Buy the correct size cover for your pool. Do not stretch your pool cover across the pool to make it fit.

  • If you tie your cover to a fence or other permanent structure, use a flexible bungee cord. This allows the cover to shift as snow and ice accumulate without pulling out corner tabs or straps. Water tubes should still be used.

Royal Swimming Pools covers will accommodate a maximum 18-inch water drop below the top edge of your pool. If you normally drop your water more than 18 inches, you should order a larger size cover.

Please order your cover by pool size, including step.
