When Is the Best Time to Run My Pool's Filtration System, and for How Long?

For better energy efficiency, the best time to run your pool’s filtration system is during off-peak hours, when electricity demand is usually lower.

When to Run Your Pool Filtration System

For many pool owners, off-peak hours are typically sometime between 8 p.m. and 10 a.m., but exact off-peak hours can vary by utility provider.

The best time to run your pump can also depend on your goal. If you want to help warm the pool, you can run the pump during the day. If you want to help cool the pool, running it at night may be a better option.

Goal Best Time to Run the Pump Why
Save energy Off-peak hours, often overnight or early morning Electricity demand and rates may be lower
Help warm the pool During the day Daytime circulation can support warmer water conditions
Help cool the pool At night Cooler overnight temperatures can help reduce heat buildup
Maintain daily circulation Long enough to turn over the pool water once Helps keep the water filtered and circulated

How Long to Run Your Pool Pump

The goal is to circulate the pool’s full volume about once per day. For single-speed pumps, this usually means running the pump for about 8-12 hours per day.

Dual-speed and variable-speed pumps may run longer because they often operate at a lower flow rate while using less electricity.

How to Calculate Pool Pump Runtime

To estimate how long your pump needs to run, use this formula:

Pump runtime = Pool volume ÷ Flow rate ÷ 60

For example, if your pool holds 20,000 gallons and your pump flow rate is 35 gallons per minute, the calculation would look like this:

20,000 ÷ 35 ÷ 60 = 9.52 hours

In this example, the pump would need to run for about 9.5 hours to turn over the pool water once.
