Why is it so important to keep my chemical levels balanced?
Balanced water keeps swimmers safe and protects your liner and equipment. Unbalanced water costs you in both directions.
Keeping the right levels in your pool allows for a safe and healthy swimming environment.
Not enough chlorine can create a haven for bacteria and create unsanitary conditions.
Too many chemicals can cause a harmful environment and dryness of skin, hair, and eyes.
Maintaining a proper balance can also prolong the life of your liner and many more components of your pool.
What to aim for
Every level has a recommended range, from free chlorine and pH through to total alkalinity and calcium hardness. Our guide to the ideal levels of your pool chemicals sets out the full range for each one.
If you want to understand one level in particular, pH is the place to start, because it affects how well the rest of your chemicals work.
How often to check
Test your water at least once each week. More detail is in our article on how often to test your chemicals.
Test more often if the pool is getting heavy use, if it has rained recently, and any time you add chemicals.
Our guide to testing your pool water covers how to collect a proper sample and what each test is telling you.
When something is already wrong
You will often see a problem in the water before a test strip tells you about it. These articles cover the most common ones:
- Cloudy water, possible causes and solutions
- Why does my swimming pool keep turning green?
- Why is there an ugly ring at the waterline?
